Après une jeunesse tumultueuse qui le verra fonder la Jeune Peinture Belge et travailler en marge du mouvement Cobra, l’artiste émigre en 1956 aux Etats-Unis où, durant les 18 années suivantes, il s’y révélera un peintre inspiré et un maître enthousiaste. Mais il reviendra déçu, après un échec matrimonial, des déboires financiers et un début d’alcoolisme: autant d’événements qui l’acculeront au suicide en 1980.
